About the St. Kizito Orphanage

The orphanage is located in Bunia, in the northeastern district of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Traditionally, orphans in Congo were quickly adopted by surrounding community and family in the event of parents dying. However, decades of conflict have led to widespread insecurity and rampant poverty. Fighting also forces families to flee and separate, therefore shattering the existing safety nets. So when children have nowhere else to go, St. Kizito steps in. They protect and nurture the most vulnerable children with love and care.

St. Kizito is the main orphanage serving the larger Oriental Province, which covers over 194,000 square miles. The orphanage serves infants & toddlers, young children, and teenagers. The number of children fluctuates, but is typically between 60 – 80, with the greatest number under two years old. Continuous effort is made to locate family members who can provide a permanent home for the child, though a long-term home is provided for children when appropriate.
